From Earth Day to Every Day: Travel Greener with DFW's Commitment to Net-Zero Carbon

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Earth Day is not just a date on the calendar; it represents our enduring commitment to sustainability. Far beyond one day, DFW is engaging our community in conversations that matter—about the air we all breathe, the water we all drink and the steps the airport is taking to be a better steward of our planet. From customers passing through, to local North Texans or environmental enthusiasts, DFW is inviting everyone to join our mission of creating a more sustainable world.

Along with the airport’s ambitious net-zero pledge is its distinction as the first airport to receive a Global Climate Action award from the United Nations. DFW was also the first airport in North America to reach carbon-neutral status nearly a decade ago, as well as the first airport in the world certified at Level 4+ ‘Transition’ in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. These firsts are not just badges of honor but steppingstones in a broader strategy that takes a proactive and comprehensive approach to reducing the airport’s climate impact.

DFW has been busy over the last few years creating a strategy to meet these goals. From transitioning to purchasing 100% renewable energy to embracing next-generation natural gas and electric fleet options, DFW is well on its way to hitting its environmental targets. The airport’s new electric Central Utility Plant (eCUP), due to open next year, will play a major role. Once complete, the eCUP will provide additional capacity for sustainable growth, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality by reducing ozone precursor emissions and lower the plant’s water usage by nearly 30%, compared with today’s systems.

Wondering how you can get involved and learn more this Earth Day and beyond? DFW has resources for educators of all kinds, from teachers to parents and anyone on a quest to share knowledge. Visit DFW’s Earth Day page for directions on how to create STEM lessons covering important topics like composting, rocks and minerals, water and biodiversity, and more.
