Berlin air traffic increasing in efficiency

Environmental Operations

Noise level virtually constant despite growing passenger numbers

A system of strict noise management has successfully been established at the Berlin Airports. This is evidenced by the 2013 Aircraft Noise Report which the airport company has now published on its website. While passenger figures have increased by 77 per cent since 2004, the number of flight movements have risen by a mere eight per cent. This is primarily due to improved capacity utilisation on aircraft, bigger, more modern and quieter aircraft as well as noise-related take-off and landing charges.

The number of operated aircraft causing particularly high noise emissions has decreased considerably over the past five years at Tegel and Schönefeld Airport. Since 2009, for example, flight movements in noise class 4 have almost halved at Schönefeld Airport and fallen to less than a quarter of their initial value at Tegel Airport.

In Schönefeld, the annual continuous sound level remained almost constant in 2013 compared to the previous year, reaching 57.1 dB(A) during the day and 52.4 dB(A) at night. The mean continuous sound level at the monitoring stations in the vicinity of Tegel Airport remained as a mean despite a two per cent increase in traffic, reaching 65.3 dB(A) during the day and dropping slightly by 0.4 dB(A) at night to 56 dB(A). This is due to the fact that the number of night flight movements has declined by 4.2 per cent compared to 2012 and as much as 11.3 per cent during the six busiest months of the year.

Transparent information

The airport company operates a total of 18 fixed and two mobile monitoring stations (as at 31/12/2013) around the airports Schönefeld and Tegel. The monitored results are published online every month and summarised in the Aircraft Noise Report. Furthermore, the range of information offered online on the topic of aircraft noise has been significantly expanded in the neighbourhood portal.

The information tool Travis enables the latest flight movements to be called up for Schönefeld and Tegel Airport with just a few minutes’ time delay. The noise monitoring stations and current data are also displayed. More data can be called up just by clicking on the monitoring station. Further information can be found here
